7 Guardians of the Tomb Title Sequence

-About

For the title sequence of 7 Guardians of the Tomb, we leaned into the film’s mythology and built an animated opener inspired by traditional Chinese shadow puppets. The story sets up the legend behind the film’s magical elixir, drawing from real Aboriginal cave paintings of enormous Chinese ships - a bit of history that actually exists!

I handled the character design and illustration, focusing on super detailed silhouettes and smart use of negative space, since everything needed to function as a digital cut-out. Once these designs were dropped into our After Effects setup, the lighting punched through the shapes just like real shadow puppets. The end result feels atmospheric, bringing the silhouettes to life and setting the tone for film and the adventure ahead.
